Please consult Queensland Health, EF Brisbane or the appropriate government body before making any decisions.
Most of the students come to Australia in good health and with valid and up to date health insurance.
Any allergies or conditions should appear on their paperwork. If you think that there might be an issue, check with the school or the student.
My understanding of their insurance is that if they need to visit the doctor, they should make an appointment , go, pay for the visit, and then claim the fee back on their insurance. They may not be entitled to the whole amount back and it would be a good idea to have a look at the insurance papers before going to the doctor to make sure they are covered.
If they need further treatment, I would check with the insurance company to see if it is covered before you get there.
If a student is unwell and doesn't attend school they need a medical certificate or they will be marked absent. If they don't attend 80% of the classes (4 days out of every 5) then they wont be able to get a certificate of attendance from the school.
If the student attends a doctor - it would be a good idea to let the school know as well so that everyone is in the loop and able to support the student.
Reciprocal Heath Agreements:
This information is from the Human Services of Australia website: Please check with your local hospital if you need to go there.
The Australian Government has agreements with New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland, Italy, Belgium, Malta, Slovenia and Norway. These agreements mean:
- Australian residents can get help with the cost of essential medical treatment when visiting these countries
- residents of these countries can get some essential medical treatments while visiting Australia.
Reciprocal Health Care Agreements aren’t designed to replace private travel health insurance for overseas travel.
Each Health Insurance Company will have different arrangements and agreements and each student will present a unique case. I believe that in an accident situation the ambulance will tend to the patient first, transport them second and after they are stable - sort out the insurance and paperwork.
